Cavalier maintain unbeaten run
THE Rudolph Speid-conditioned Cavalier Soccer Club defeated Vere Phoenix 2-1 at Sabina Park yesterday, as they returned to winning ways in the Jamaica Premier League after drawing their previous two games.
Dwayne Atkinson scored in the opening minute and a 42nd-minute strike by Jalmaro Calvin ensured full points for Cavalier.
Matthew Woo Ling scored for Vere at the 67th minute.
Cavalier started like a house on fire as live wire Atkinson outmuscled his marker Damion Thomas and calmly slotted his opportunity inside the opponents' goal.
Vere United sprang into action in the 23rd minute as a surging run from Alex Gayle which initially seemed threatening, ended with a shot in the side netting.
Vere United were made to rue that missed chance as Cavalier doubled their lead on a back of a classic counter-attack which was capped off by dangerous Calvin, who netted his fifth of the season.
In the second half, Cavalier continued their press for more goals and came close in the 62nd minute but Atkinson's cracking shot from just outside the 18-yard box was superbly saved by Vere United's custodian Shakur Adair.
Vere United would eventually get off the mark as Woo Ling managed to scramble his effort from a corner over the goal line in the 67th minute. That goal proved to be a mere consolation as Cavalier held on to register their fourth victory in seven games.
Craig Butler, technical director of Vere United, shared that he wasn't impressed with how defending champions Cavalier played and reiterated that he's still awaiting the services of his Manning Cup players.
"If this is the top of the league then it shows that once we have our reinforcements we will easily win this league. If this is the top of the league, I'm not impressed. I think our players played well and if we had our full cadre of players, I think we would have won this game easily," he believes.
Rudolph Speid, head coach of Cavalier, stated that he was only focused on one task and that was getting the win.
"I'll go back and look at it but at this point in time I wasn't concerned with what they were playing. We were just focused on getting the three points, which was most important," Speid stated.
