Storm Valley should provide forceful start for Reggae 6
SATURDAY's Reggae 6 could turn out an even easier bet than Tuesday's Jamaica Derby Day mandatory payout, which returned $9,127 to winning tickets.
It's hard not to start with STORM VALLEY as a banker at five furlongs round among bottom-of-the-barrel claimers. Second behind out-of-class NINA DORADA, who made it two easy wins in a row at the level on July 13, STORM VALLEY finished well clear of third-horse UNDECIDED.
Claimed for $180,000 as a runner-up to GALWAY BAY on February 10, STORM VALLEY's handlers twice tried the 10-year-old among $250,000 company before returning to whence he was claimed, only to run smack into NINA DORADA.
Leading rider Tevin Foster has remained aboard STORM VALLEY, certainly a plus for the multiple-winner, 14 wins from 70 starts, now hustling at the lowest level.
ANONYMOUS and CRIMSON are the horses to be on in the second. On paper, ANONYMOUS should be the horse to beat. However, horses suddenly thrown in on claiming tags from major barns, despite their back class and accompanying victories among weaker rivals, will show their flaws sooner or later. Therefore, CRIMSON, another runner with back class, should accompany ANONYMOUS on all bets.
Give INDESTRUCTIBLE another chance in the third after being forced into the pace on last. Fitted with a visor, INDESTRUCTIBLE was too sharp on the lead, first time out off a three-month break, trying to chase ABREATHOFFRESHAIR.
However, use Gary Subratie's THE GENERAL with INDESTRUCTIBLE. Not badly bred, a half-brother to speedy REGNANT, THE GENERAL could be a sleeper in waiting. Noted closing from off the pace in back-to-back races out the straight, the colt definitely needed more ground and could come alive on the round course.
The fourth could be a tricky affair with imported maiden POPE'S LADY renewing rivalry with local-bred winner, PRINCE AMAAN, at five furlongs straight. POPE LADY finished ahead of PRINCE AMAAN when both were beaten by TEFLON DON in a driving finish out the straight. However, PRINCE AMAAN was checked between horses and had to switch course.
MAGICAL MOOD gets the nod in the fifth out the straight after pushing imported EAGLE ONE to the tilt at the trip on July 7. However, claimers often go sore after major efforts, turning the form book on its head, making DODGE THIS LINK and CAPTUREMYSHIP worthy back-up selections.
Close Reggae 6 bets with ROHAN KABIR as a banker. The eight-year-old was forced into fast splits by a no-nonsense SIMBA THE LION on July 7, 1:14.3 for six furlongs, leaving him winded but still second-best at seven furlongs among $400,000 claimers.
