Senior Link Up to fill in for JIIM
With the sudden cancellation of the Jamaica International Invitational Meet, MVP Track Club has moved speedily to ensure that Jamaican athletes get one final meet before they go off to the IAAF World Relays.
The club is putting on their Nike Senior Link Up Track and Field Meet on Saturday, May 4, at the National Stadium and track and field fans can watch for free.
The athletes, who were selected to represent the country at the World Relays in Yokohama Japan, will depart the island on Tuesday and MVP Track Club president Bruce James wanted to provide them with one more opportunity to fine-tune before leaving the island.
"The real purpose of this meet is that the athletes of Jamaica are scheduled to go to the World Relays, and they leave next Tuesday, so they needed one more meet to sharpen them up," James said. "It is really an opportunity to give the athletes good races and competition in excellent condition at the National Stadium."
Two-time 100m Olympic Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and reigning Olympic sprint double champion Elaine Thompson, along with their teammates from the club are down to compete.
"All the MVP athletes who can run will run, and these athletes will be selecting the events. We are still getting applications from other clubs," James said.
The events that will be contested are the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, discus.
"The meet is free and we are asking the public to come out and support the athletes," James said.
The meet starts at 5 p.m.
