Returning players boost coach's confidence

Former national batsman Ordelmo Peters said he would be surprised if Jamaica's Under-19 do not win the regional tournament, which gets under way next month.

Peters, a first-time national-level coach, said is based on the make-up of the team.

"We have a good combination, a balanced squad and we are going to give a very good account of ourselves,''he said.

Peters' confidence stems from the inclusion of four players from last year's team, which finished runners-up to Guyana.

Returning are captain and batting all-rounder Michael Frew, who was a member of the West Indies victorious Under-19 team in Bangladesh; batsmen Brad Barnes and Tyrone Daley; and fast bowler Miguel Smith.

"These players bring a lot to the table and we expect them to guide the equally talented juniors,''said Peters, after the naming of the team, last Friday, at Sabina Park.

"We have seven batsmen, a number of whom bowl as well; three specialist spinners; and four fast bowlers, who should be able to take care of any condition we encounter,'' he added.

Peters, a former coach of national two-day champions Melbourne, who he represented during his playing days, is also hoping to make a winning start to his career as a national coach.

"I am looking forward to starting out on a winning note, as that is what I am all about,'' he proclaimed.

The regional Under-19 tournament is set for St Vincent and the Grenadines, July 24 to August 20.
