Carlong Publishers donates $4.1 million worth of books to basic schools islandwide
Despite the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, Carlong Publishers continued its 30th anniversary celebrations with a donation of 5,000 textbooks, and readers, to 100 basic schools across Jamaica.
This year’s increased donation intends to promote literacy, and the reading habit among Jamaican children at the early childhood level.
In support of its 30th anniversary theme, “Empowering youth and community through knowledge and cultural confidence”, Carlong said that it remains dedicated to providing children with access to the educational resources they need, especially those further disadvantaged by COVID-19.
With the help of the Early Childhood Commission (ECC), who identified the schools in need, Carlong’s increased donation valued at JMD$4.1 million, gifted an assortment of 50 age-appropriate textbooks and readers for children ages 3 to 6 years to 100 needy basic schools. 2,500 books were also donated to an additional 50 schools.
While Carlong was unable to host the usual presentation ceremony for the
schools, the donation was officially presented to the ECC on June 3 , 2020 for distribution to the schools identified.
