Popcaan accused of bad mind after Bolt song comments
Dancehall's 'Unruly One', Popcaan, has found himself at the centre of what may be considered the first official 'Internet drama' to unfold on social media for 2021.
This after a comment made from his verified Instagram account regarding Usain Bolt's latest single with his longtime best friend, Nugent' NJ' Walker, stirred some controversy on Monday. In a post made under one of Bolt's videos promoting the track, Living The Dream, Popcaan's account holder urged the sprint sensation and his executive manager to "help up some youth wid real musical talent".
"Wid all due respect legend ... NJ a me fam, but please just give some hungry youth wey actually have talent tha platform dey. Happy new year," the post also read. Describing the song as "trash", some users agreed with Popcaan. They insisted that the only reason the song will generate a buzz is because of Bolt's star power.
"That song is trash and just cause it's Bolt some people going be the comments like, it's fire. Set a yes man dem," sosa_santana876 wrote. "Somebody needed to say it," callme_shan also posted.
But others lashed out at the Inviolable singer, accusing him of 'bad mind', as they defended Bolt and NJ.
"Badmind is active. Every youth deserve a chance, you of all people should know cause when you touch Gaza you never talented until you master the craft so stop badmind ghetto youths and make dem try and follow dem dreams," user jamscooptv commented. Some believed Popcaan's comment was not fit for a public space such as Instagram and felt his posting it there was a sign that he did not respect Bolt and NJ's genesis into music.
Not their style
When THE STAR team contacted NJ for a comment, he said he was not aware of Popcaan's comment, as he does not spend much of his time keeping up with social media activity. He then added that even if he and Bolt did see the post, it is not their style to comment on things that have the potential to be controversial.
"I would have to check for myself about that post but even then I would not have any comment. Controversy is not us at all. We're just doing what we're doing and commenting on these things, is not our style," he said. In an interview with THE STAR on the weekend, Bolt said the song was written by NJ last October and was inspired by their 'rags to riches' story. The single is currently number 20 on YouTube's local trending chart, amassing some 90,000 views in 48 hours.
