As the climate change conversation gets louder, some local party promoters are opening their ears.

Organisers of soca events in the Corporate Area have encouraged their patrons to walk with their own coolers and mugs, and hand out reusable branded cups.

But for events in more rural areas, like Yellow Blocko in Mavis Bank, the promoter is taking on the climate change challenge in his own way.

At the fourth instalment of the soca-themed party, set for April 12 (Easter Sunday), promoter Oval Dixon plans to 'go green', and spread climate change awareness in the dance.

The first look should make it obvious, with bamboo featuring as a primary decorating material.

"I'm from a rural community. We have bamboo at our disposal, and there are so many things you can do. We're even inviting persons who make crafts from bamboo to come and showcase their stuff," Dixon told THE STAR. If all goes according to plan, everything that is used in the event will be recycled.

Dixon shared that he is in discussions with local recycling agents about providing recycle bins for his event and for a primary school in the area.

"I've already spoken to the principal and she's interested. The aim is to get the community alive and aware of climate change and going green," he said.

Dixon is also currently in discussions with a company that provides eco-friendly utensils.

"I'm trying to use Yellow Blocko as a drive to educate people about climate change. We're trying to have displays sectioned throughout the event - where you'll have environmental advocates and their supporters," he said.

Dixon is encouraging patrons to create costumes using recyclable materials, with the best costume winning a weekend for two.
