Students seek to turn Chaps into a star

A group of students at the Vocational Training and Development Institute (VDTI) in Kingston have embarked on a project to market an entertainer as part of an artiste management course.

The artiste selected is Chaps, an entertainer from Mountain View in St Andrew. The project got off to a glitzy start with the launch of Chap's debut EP, Oh Gosh, at the House of Dancehall on December 22.

"The whole thing was a joy. It's great that all my friends and supporters from Mountain View and surrounding areas came out to support me, mi feel really grateful for this opportunity," Chaps said.

David Reid, a VTDI lecturer overseeing an artiste management course, said he was proud of the effort of his cohort of 13 students.

"The students have to do career plan for upcoming artistes, organise how to get that artiste on the road, do photo shoots, grooming sessions, media management and stagecraft, and they have to do a public launch. Last year's group did a gospel artiste, this is the second dancehall artiste and the most successful so far," Reid said.
