Reggae Girlz face early top-of-the-table clash
The Reggae Girlz are set to meet Nicaragua in an early top-of-the-table clash in the Concacaf W Qualifiers today at the Nicaragua National Stadium at 7 p.m. Jamaica time.
The Girlz currently sit second in Group B with three points, following their 18-0 win against Dominica in the group's opening game.
Nicaragua lead with six points from two games.
Guyana sit third in the group on three points after picking up their first win, a 3-0 victory over Dominica last week. Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica sit fourth and fifth, respectively, both without a point.
Reggae Girlz head coach, Hubert Busby Jr, said today's game will be a tougher contest, as Nicaragua are the group leaders and are ranked higher than Dominica.
Nicaragua are ranked 96th in the world, and are the third highest ranked team in the group, behind Jamaica, 39th, and Guyana, 93rd.
"We know it'll be a different match and a little bit more of a challenge," Busby said.
"They are a better quality opposition based on their rankings and obviously, coming in, they're leading the group based on wins so far, with two wins, so it'll be a much harder game," he said.
Leading the lines for Jamaica will be in-form striker Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw, who has scored 15 goals in 16 games this season for Manchester City in the Barclay's Women's Super League, while also providing four assists.
The winner of the group will advance to the Concacaf W Championships, which serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, as well as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Jamaica are hunting their third consecutive appearance at the World Cup, as well as their first-ever appearance at the Olympics.
